Helicopter: We all have seen the helicopter flying in the sky. With the help of a big fan mounted on the top of the helicopter, it flies in the air above the ground. Airplane also flies in the air. Its engine and its wings help the airplane to fly. The airplane turns right or left only with the help of wings. But the question is that there are no wings in the helicopter, then how does it turn in the air and how does it move back and forth?
How does the helicopter fly in the air?
The fan on top of an airplane is almost like a ceiling fan in a house. Which pushes the air from top to bottom. Due to which the helicopter is able to fly upwards in the air. That’s why dust also flies when the helicopter flies. In the language of physics, the Bernoulli Principle works here. A helicopter is a type of aircraft that uses rotating wings to fly. These rotating wings are called blades. With the help of these rotating blades, the helicopter is able to do everything which is not possible to do in an aeroplane.

According to Bernoulli’s Principle, when the speed increases the pressure decreases and when the speed decreases the pressure increases. In this way wind speed and air pressure are related to each other. The wings are made in such a way that their upper part remains curved while the lower part of the wings is flat. This shape of the wings increases the speed of the air passing above it, as compared to the air passing below, due to which the pressure of the air above decreases and the pressure of the air below increases. This helps the wings to rise up.
How to go right-left or forward-backward?
The helicopter is driven right-left or forward-backward in the air only with the help of its rotor blades. The pilot has 5 basic movement and steering controls, which include two hand levers called collective and cyclic pitch, a throttle and two foot pedals. Flying a helicopter involves a complex interplay between these different controls. To move the helicopter, the pilot changes the angle of the selected blades rotating in a cyclic pitch.
For example, if the helicopter has to move to the left, the pilot will increase the angle of the blades on the right side and the angle of the blades on the left side will be kept low. In such a situation, more lift is generated on the right side of the helicopter, which will tilt the overall lift and the helicopter will move to the left. Similarly, to move the helicopter forward, the angle of the rotor blades in the front has to be reduced, while the angle of the back rotor blades has to be increased. Thrust will be generated from this back which will force the helicopter to move forward.
